Putrajaya – Forty eight Standard Four and Five students representing the top three best spellers from each state in Malaysia bid to be the country’s national English spelling champion in the “Knowledge Discovery 2nd National Spelling Competition”.
These students, who won in the state level competition, will now engage in three challenging battles before becoming the ultimate spelling champion in Malaysia. The state level spelling competitions were held in their respective states since June this year.
Jointly organised by Knowledge Discovery magazine and the Ministry of Education Malaysia with CHAMPS, the leading brand for children’s multivitamins as the main sponsor, the competition aims to enhance the spelling capability and enrich the vocabulary of primary school students, improve their English and imbue in the students the reading and writing habit.
CCM Bhd Group Managing Director Dato’ Dr Mohd Hashim Tajudin said the competition provides an excellent platform to create a generation of children who are knowledgeable and well read.
“In today’s age of technology, children do not read enough and have forgotten how to spell as it is so easy to run a spell check at the click of a mouse. In preparing for a spelling competition, students will be tested on a comprehensive list of words. This also ultimately is a test of their confidence as they are required to think on their feet and face a large crowd.
“As the main sponsor of this competition, we feel proud to be associated with an initiative which stimulates the development of mental and physical health among growing children.
“Our CHAMPS multivitamins are formulated specially for children as quality and satisfactory supplemental nutrients to keep their mind and body fit and strong and in line with that, we hope that this spelling competition will strengthen their learning capabilities,” said Dato’ Dr Mohd Hashim.
The champion will receive a Championship Trophy and certificate, Knowledge Discovery Educational Grant of RM1,000, a 3D/2N holiday package in Langkawi Lagoon Resort, a mobile handphone and digital camera, CHAMPS hamper worth RM200, a two-year subscription of Knowledge Discovery magazine and other sponsored prizes. The runner-up will receive a certificate, a 3D/2N holiday package in Bukit Merah Laketown, a mobile handphone, CHAMPS hamper worth RM150, a two-year subscription of Knowledge Discovery magazine and other sponsored prizes while consolation prize winners will each get a certificate and a one-year year subscription of Knowledge Discovery magazine.
The Director General of Education, Ministry of Education, Dato’ Hj Alimuddin Hj Mohd Dom was also present to grace the event.
In July this year, the “2008 Knowledge Discovery Spelling Day” was held in Pahang and saw a participation of more than 53,000 students from 527 primary schools comprising Standard Four and Five students from all schools in the state. The event managed to set a record in the Malaysian Book of Records with the biggest participation in a single spelling competition.
