Kuantan – More than 53,000 students from 527 primary schools comprising Standard 4 and 5 students from all schools in Pahang set a record in the Malaysian Book of Records with the biggest participation in a single spelling event.
The “2008 Knowledge Discovery Spelling Day” jointly organised by Knowledge Discovery magazine and the Pahang State Education Department with CHAMPS, the leading brand for children’s multivitamins as the main sponsor was held in Pahang to commemorate the win of 12-year old Kashwini d/o Arumugam who became Malaysia’s first national English spelling champion in the 2007 edition of the “Knowledge Discovery National Spelling Competition” held in Selangor on 25th Oct 2007.
In the “2008 Knowledge Discovery Spelling Day”, Standard Four and Five students from Pahang participated in a written spelling competition held simultaneously at all schools. Teachers dictated the word while the students wrote their answers down. A clue sheet containing the words’ definition and sample sentences excluding the required word was provided to all the students. The top three contestants with the highest number of correct answers from each class then proceeded to the interclass level. Subsequently, the top three best ‘spellers’ from the interclass level will represent their schools at the district level competition to be held at a later date.
The “2008 Knowledge Discovery Spelling Day” aims to enhance the spelling capability and enrich the vocabulary of primary school students, improve their English and imbue in the students the reading and writing habit. More importantly, the competition provides an opportunity for students to participate in a competition that challenges them at classroom, school, zone, district, state and national levels.
CCM Bhd Group Managing Director Dato’ Dr Mohd Hashim Tajudin said the competition was an ideal and interesting way to enhance literacy among school children by getting them excited and competitive.
“We can inculcate the spirit of perseverance and determination in an individual via competitions and we believe that this quality is an important one to sow in a child.
“CCM is dedicated to developing the mental and physical health of young Malaysians. Our CHAMPS multivitamins are formulated specially for children as quality and satisfactory supplemental nutrients to enhance their daily vitamin intakes,” said Dato’ Dr Mohd Hashim.
All participating schools and students were recognised in the Malaysian Book of Records as well as receiving certificates of participation from the organisers. The “2008 Knowledge Discovery Spelling Day” is part of the second “Knowledge Discovery National Spelling Competition” jointly organised by the Ministry of Education and Knowledge Discovery magazine with CHAMPS as the main sponsor since 2007. The “Knowledge Discovery National Spelling Competition 2008” grand final will be held in October 2008 in Putrajaya.
